Since 2020

mim | Raum für Kultur

The “mim | Raum für Kultur” is a place for cultural exchange and encounter for everyone in the Glockenbachviertel, in the heart of Munich. Through changing presentations, “mim” presents art and design by creatives from all disciplines on an equal footing and hosts concerts, readings, and talks (“mim Talks”). Since its founding in September 2020, 36 exhibitions have been shown at “mim.”

In 2024, “mim” was awarded the “Prize for Galleries and Off-Spaces” by the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich in recognition of its commitment to the local art scene and Munich as an art location.

Five key terms have shaped the work of “mim” from the very beginning:

Media diversity

“mim” (“made in munich”) stands for exhibitions by artists who live in Munich or have another connection to the city. The focus lies on dialogue between emerging artists across all forms of expression and more established, sometimes lesser-known practitioners. Talks (“mim Talks”), film screenings, and music events, all free of charge, complement the deliberately broad program.

Accessibility

“mim” offers artists without permanent gallery representation a platform, encourages interaction with the neighborhood, and contributes to an urban community that stands for diversity despite ongoing gentrification. Its central location, step-free access, and the possibility to view exhibitions from outside opening hours reflect the aim of being a space for everyone.

Mediation

The local community in the Glockenbachviertel is diverse, with nightlife venues, creative spaces, a school, a retirement home, and a men’s residence, generating lively foot traffic. For “mim” operator and artist Miro Craemer, who also works as an external art educator for the Pinakothek der Moderne, it is particularly important to introduce the work of local artists to people without prior contact with the established cultural scene.

Cooperations

The exhibition program consciously seeks intersections with film, literature, music, performance, and design. Collaborations, including with the Fassbinder Days, the Glockenbach Biennale, associations and cooperatives such as Female Photoclub and Bellevue di Monaco, create synergies and reach new communities.

Sustainability

“mim” sees itself as a place of social responsibility. Ecological awareness and sustainability form the basis of all projects. After covering expenses, all proceeds go to the participating artists. The trust of the artists, a growing regular audience, and a fair rental agreement provide a longer-term perspective. At the same time, exclusive private funding remains a challenge.
