Die Färberei

FÄRBEREI is a municipal youth cultural institution of Kreisjugendring München-Stadt with a regional and national reach. For more than 25 years, it has initiated, facilitated, organized, and connected young art and culture.

With the opening of KÖŞK in 2014 as a temporary use project in Munich’s Westend district, and since its establishment in 2023 as a permanent institution of KJR München-Stadt near the central station, the two venues have been closely linked. Since then, the focus has included inclusive and intergenerational artistic projects in both public and digital spaces.

FÄRBEREI and KÖŞK are open, democratic places and artistic spaces of freedom. They are art labs for experimenting and tinkering, without prior knowledge and guided by the principle of trial and error. They function as platforms for discourse, exchange, presentation, and production for and with artists. They are meeting spaces for people who might not otherwise encounter one another within our institutionalized society. They offer space and time for collaboration, participation, and social warmth, without pressure. All of this is free of charge or follows the principle of “pay what you can.”

FÄRBEREI hosts a wide range of open workshops, including sewing, ceramics, sound, screen printing, and a rooftop garden. The program ranges from recurring community series and thematic artistic interventions to workshops and the long term project “Die offenen Ö_Werkstätten.” On a regular basis, the entire FÄRBEREI transforms every Friday under the motto “Dö könn jö jödö*r kömmön” (“Anyone can come”) into a field for artistic experimentation and an inviting meeting place.

Together and in collaboration with initiatives and institutions, FÄRBEREI and KÖŞK regularly realize art projects in public space that place cultural participation for all at the center. Examples include “KUNST IM QUADRAT / KURZ IM QUADRAT” at Theresienwiese and across the city, as well as the annual repainting of the surfaces under the Brudermühlbrücke titled “DÖSENÖFFNER,” both carried out in cooperation with GLOCKENBACHWERKSTATT and LUISE. Since the start of their permanent cooperation with MaximiliansForum in 2021, FÄRBEREI and KÖŞK have expanded the exhibitions of the municipal art space through their “Ö_Werkstätten.”
